Most people know about Wimbledon and the US Open, but if you’re a fan of tennis, you know there’s a lot more competition and back-and-forth action on the court throughout the year for both the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). And if you’re a big tennis fan, you probably already know how close we are to the first of the four major championships that make up the coveted Grand Slam. The Australian Open is just over a month away, which makes it prime time to discuss all the ways you’ll be able to watch stars like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, and more during the 2023 ATP and WTA tours.
While tennis may not draw the same massive and energetic crowds or produce the same kind of highlights that go viral on social media as other popular sports in America, it’s still undeniably one of the most popular sports in the world. It’s also quite clearly one of the most popular individual/non-team sports, if not the most popular one.
The lack of coverage from major sports channels and publications can make it difficult for diehard fans to catch every amazing serve, impressive rally, and set-clinching smash of the tennis major season. So if you feel overwhelmed when you search for “How to watch the 2023 tennis season” then this blog is exactly what you need. We help you “pitch” the perfect schedule, give some facts behind every tournament, and help you decide which TV & internet package is the best to watch the upcoming tennis season.
But, before diving into the scheduling, it is important to understand the tournament itself. If you are a tennis veteran, you can skip to any section to check the scheduling, but if you are a beginner and want to learn about the tournament, this next section is for you.
ATP Tournament – What Is It?
ATP tournament or ATP tour is an annual professional men’s tennis tournament (including 2023) that takes place globally. The Association of Tennis Professionals organizes the ATP tour. The ATP tour comprises four major tournaments: the Grand slam, ATP tour masters 1000, ATP 500, and ATP 250. The International Tennis Federation supervises these tournaments. ATP ranks the elite players based on their performance throughout the season. At the end of the season, the top 8 elite players compete with each other in the ATP world tour finals.
ATP tournaments are scheduled from January to November. The important thing to note here is ATP tournaments focus on the men’s category. For the female category, the WTP is responsible. Same as ATP, WTP comprises four grand slams and over 50 events.
Now, onto our schedules!
Grand Slam Tournament 2023:
First on our list, and probably the most prestigious tennis tournament, is the Grand Slam!
But have you wondered what Grand Slam means? The term “Grand Slam” is a term that refers to the collection of four tennis tournaments. As said above, the tennis season takes place between January and November and comprises 4 major tournaments. If a tennis player wins all the tournaments in that season, then that tennis player has won the title “Grand Slam.” But what if a player won all four tournaments, not in the same season (same year) but in their career? Then that tennis player gets the “Career Grand Slam.”
As said above, the Grand Slam comprises four major tournaments:
- Australian Open
- Roland Garros
- Wimbledon
- US Open
ATP Ranking Points in Grand Slam:
The four major tournaments are considered the highest-ranking tournaments in the ATP tennis season. ATP gives points to players as the Grand slam winner gets 2000 points, and the runner-up in that season gets 1200 points. You can divide these points as
- ATP Masters 1000 – Earns 1000 points for winners.
- ATP 500 – Earns 500 points for winners.
- ATP 250 – Earns 250 points for winners.
Facts for thought: Currently, Novak Djokovic has accumulated more ATP points (16950 pts) than any other player.
